When a Storm Puts a Tree Where It Doesn't Belong
Emergency storm tree service covers the calls nobody plans for: a limb through the roof, an oak across the driveway, a maple split down the middle and resting on the garage. In Akron those calls come in waves, after summer thunderstorms and derechos, and after wet snow or ice in late fall and early spring. On August 25, 2023, storms that produced six confirmed tornadoes in northeast Ohio knocked out power to about 220,000 FirstEnergy customers and dropped trees on houses, cars and roads around Akron. Work after a storm is sorted by danger, and a tree resting on a structure always goes first.
First: stay safe
If a tree is touching a wire, or a wire is down anywhere near it, stay well back and assume the line is live. Report it to Ohio Edison at 1-888-544-4877 or by texting OUT to 544487, and call 911 if anyone is in danger. Don't try to pull a limb off a line or cut a tree that's under tension. Trunks and limbs bent under the weight of another tree can spring back hard when cut, which is a common cause of serious chainsaw injuries.
What happens on an emergency call
The first job is making the situation stable: getting the weight off the house or car without letting it drop further, and taking down hanging limbs (hangers) that could fall on someone. That often means rigging the tree in place and lifting or lowering pieces in a set order. A crane is sometimes the safest way to lift a large trunk off a roof without further damage. Once the tree is off, any opening in the roof can be covered by a roofer or by you while the rest of the cleanup is scheduled.
Trees that survived but aren't right
After the cleanup, look at the trees that are still standing. Split forks, cracked trunks, a crown that suddenly leans, roots lifted out of the soil on one side, and limbs snapped high in the canopy can all fail in the next storm. Some of those can be pruned or cabled; some need to come down. We'll walk the rest of the yard while we're there.
Insurance and paperwork
Many homeowners policies help pay for removing a tree that fell on a covered structure, often with a set limit per tree; a tree that falls in the yard without hitting anything usually isn't covered. Check your own policy and talk with your agent. Take photos before anything is moved if it's safe to do so, and we'll give you an itemized written invoice that describes the work.
City trees after a storm
If the fallen tree or limb came from a city tree in the devil strip or blocks the street, report it to the City of Akron at 311 (330-375-2311 from a cell phone). The city's Parks Maintenance forestry crew handles storm damage cleanup for street trees in the right-of-way.
Storm Work We Handle
Each storm job is different; these are the most common.
Trees on roofs and structures
Rigged and removed in a controlled sequence so the house doesn't take more damage.
Hanging and broken limbs
Hangers caught in the canopy and split limbs brought down before they fall on their own.
Uprooted and leaning trees
Trees pulled out of the ground or tipped by wind cut up and cleared, with the root plate leveled.
Driveway and access clearing
Blocked drives and walks opened first so you can get in and out.
Post-storm tree check
A look at the standing trees for cracks, splits and lean that could fail next time.

Typical Storm and Emergency Tree Costs
| Job | Published range |
|---|---|
| Emergency removal, complex (Angi, national) | up to about $5,000 |
| Same-day or next-day service (HomeGuide) | often 2 to 3 times the standard rate |
| Standard removal, medium tree, Akron (Homeyou) | $590 to $799 |
| Crane rental (Angi, national) | about $250 to $600 per day |
| Difficult crane removals (Angi, national) | $6,000 to $7,000 total |
Ranges from Angi (October 2026), HomeGuide (February 2026) and Homeyou's Akron guide (October 2026). A tree on a house costs more than the same tree standing, because it must be rigged and lifted off. Your written estimate is the price.
How an Emergency Call Works
1. Call and describe
Tell us where the tree is, what it's on and whether wires are involved; photos help.
2. Make the site safe
Weight taken off the structure and hanging limbs brought down first.
3. Written price for the rest
Once it's stable, the full removal and cleanup are quoted in writing.
4. Clear and check
Wood and debris removed, and the standing trees looked over for damage.

Emergency Storm Tree Service Questions
A tree fell on my house. What should I do first?
Get everyone out of the affected rooms, stay away from any downed wires, and call 911 if anyone is hurt or there's a gas smell. Report downed lines to Ohio Edison at 1-888-544-4877. Then call us to leave the details, and take photos for your insurance company if it's safe.
Does homeowners insurance pay for storm tree removal?
Often, when the tree damaged a covered structure such as the house, garage or a fence, usually up to a limit per tree. A tree that falls in the yard without hitting anything is often not covered. Policies vary, so check yours and talk with your agent.
Who removes a city tree that fell in a storm?
If the tree came from the devil strip or is blocking the street, report it to the City of Akron at 311 (330-375-2311 from a cell phone). The city's forestry crew handles storm cleanup of street trees in the right-of-way.
Can I cut up a fallen tree myself?
Small limbs on the ground, yes, with care. Anything under tension, leaning on another tree or a structure, or near a wire should be left to a crew, because bent wood can spring back violently when it's cut.
