Where the City's Trees End and Yours Begin

Tree Service in Stow works alongside a city forestry program that is older than most of the subdivisions it serves. Stow has been recognized as a Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation for 44 years, and its Urban Forestry department is responsible for planting, maintaining and removing all trees in the city right-of-way. The city's code establishes a tree district covering every public street, city property and open space. So the trees out by the road are the city's to manage. Everything behind that line, in the back and side yards of Stow's 15,000-plus homes, is where we come in.

Suburban lots, mature canopy

Stow grew fast after it incorporated as a village in 1957 and became a city after the 1960 census. Many neighborhoods date from that era, and the trees planted then are now 60 years old and tall enough to reach a roof from the far side of the yard. Census figures show about 72% of homes are owner-occupied, with a median value around $248,000. These are the yards where people want to keep a good tree, so most of our Stow work is pruning: reducing heavy limbs over houses, raising the canopy for clearance and taking out dead wood before it falls.

Wind along the Darrow Road corridor

During the August 2023 storms, a large tree fell across Darrow Road in Stow, one of many trees downed across Summit and Portage counties that night. Wind damage here usually shows up in trees with weak branch unions, decay at old wounds or roots damaged by past construction. If a storm leaves a hanger, a broken limb caught in the canopy, over your driveway, keep people out from under it and call (330) 325-4776.

Brush: what the drop-off is for

Stow runs a brush drop-off on Stow Road across from Silver Springs Park for residents with photo ID. It takes trees, trunks, branches and shrubs, with material over 8 inches in diameter separated out, and it does not take grass, leaves or root balls. Residential and commercial contractors are not allowed to use it. If you prune your own shrubs, it's a handy option. When we do the work, we take the debris with us.

Typical Stow jobs

1. Crown reduction on oaks and maples that have outgrown the backyard 2. Removal of dead ash and other declining trees before they drop limbs 3. Clearance pruning around decks, play sets and the service line to the house 4. Stump grinding after removals so the lawn can be reseeded 5. Storm cleanup of split trunks and hangers

The Big Tree Contest

Stow's forestry program runs a Big Tree Contest, which for 2026 is looking for the largest maples in the city. If you think you own a contender, it's one more reason to have it pruned properly instead of topped. Get a free estimate

Stow Tree Notes

  • 44 years as a Tree City USA. Stow reports 44 years of Tree City USA recognition from the Arbor Day Foundation. The city also publishes a Stow Tree Management Plan 2025 and runs an annual Big Tree Contest, focused on maples in 2026.
  • Residents-only brush drop-off. The brush drop-off at 5070 Stow Road, across from Silver Springs Park, is for Stow residents with photo ID. Contractors are prohibited, material over 8 inches in diameter must be separated, and grass, leaves and root balls are not accepted.

Stow Questions

The tree between my sidewalk and the street looks bad. Is that mine to fix?

In Stow, trees in the city right-of-way are the Urban Forestry department's responsibility, including removal. Contact the city first. If the tree is on your property, we can assess it and quote the work.

Can your crew drop our brush at the Stow Road site?

No. The drop-off is for residents only, and contractors are prohibited. We chip and haul our own debris as part of the job.

How often should a big backyard maple be pruned?

For a mature shade tree, a careful pruning every few years is typical, more often if it hangs over the house. The goal is to remove dead, weak and crossing limbs without stripping the interior or topping the tree.

Do you grind stumps left from old removals?

Yes. We grind below grade so you can add soil and seed. Tell us roughly how wide the stump is and whether a gate limits access, and we can include it in the estimate.
