Village Lots Around Two Lakes

Tree Service in Silver Lake is work done in a small, settled place. The village covers about 1.4 square miles of land plus Silver Lake and Crystal Lake, and had about 2,500 residents in 2020. It's almost entirely surrounded by Stow and Cuyahoga Falls, with a short border with Munroe Falls. There's no commercial strip to speak of; it's houses, yards, lakes and trees.

From roller coaster to residential

Ralph H. Lodge bought the lake in 1874, and the surrounding land grew into the 600-acre Silver Lake Amusement Park, with a roller coaster, dance hall, hotel and a miniature railway that ran from 1902 to 1917. At its peak it drew more than 10,000 visitors a day. The park was sold in 1917 and divided into house lots, and the village incorporated in 1918. That's why so many streets here have the feel of a planned neighborhood a century old, with trees to match.

Water's edge

Trees near water grow differently. They lean toward the open light over the lake, their roots stay wet, and they often carry heavy limbs out over docks, boathouses and shorelines. For lakefront owners, the usual requests are: 1. Reducing limbs that hang over the water or a dock 2. Removing trees that are leaning more each year toward the lake 3. Pruning to open a view without stripping the tree 4. Taking down dead trees close to the shoreline before they fall in When we remove a tree right on the water, we often leave the stump and roots to help hold the bank.

Storm history

In the August 2023 storm that knocked out power to tens of thousands of FirstEnergy customers across Summit and Portage counties, Graham Road in Silver Lake was closed for debris cleanup. Mature canopy on a compact street means one big failure can block a road and hit two houses at once. Regular deadwood removal and pruning of weak limbs is the most effective way to cut that risk.

An older population

In 2010 the village's median age was 49.9, and about 70% of households were married couples. Many residents have been here a long time and know their trees well. We take the same approach on every property: walk it with you, listen to what you've noticed over the years, and explain what we see.

Power lines

Ohio Edison lists Silver Lake on its tree-trimming program, which follows a four-year cycle. Branches on primary lines are the utility's job; we take care of the rest.

Replanting near the water

A good replacement for a lost lakeside tree is one that tolerates wet soil and won't outgrow the spot. Plant it a few feet back from the shoreline and keep it well clear of any overhead service line to the house.

Silver Lake Questions

Can you prune my lakefront trees to open up the view?

Yes. We do it by selectively thinning and raising limbs, not by topping, so the tree stays healthy and the view opens gradually. Sometimes it takes two visits a few years apart to get the result you want.

What happens to a tree you remove right at the water's edge?

We take it down in sections so nothing drops into the lake, and we usually leave the stump and roots in place to help stabilize the shoreline unless you ask otherwise.

Our street is narrow. Will your truck block traffic?

Briefly, sometimes. We plan where to park equipment before the job, keep the road open as much as possible, and clean up the street before we leave.

How often should lakefront trees be checked?

Every few years is reasonable, and after any major storm. Trees by the water lean and grow toward the light, so their weight shifts over time; a quick inspection catches problems before a limb ends up on a dock.
