Small City, Mature Yards
Tree Service in Fairlawn is close, careful work. The city is only about 4.57 square miles, incorporated as a village in 1960, and most of its 3,500-odd homes sit on established lots with trees that have had six decades to fill in. Census figures show 76.7% of homes are owner-occupied and 25.8% of residents are 65 or older, one of the higher shares in the Akron suburbs. A lot of our Fairlawn calls come from people who have cared for the same trees for years and now want someone else on the ladder.
Why Fairlawn jobs take finesse
In a compact suburb, a tall tree almost always has something under it: a roof, a neighbor's fence, a patio, a garden someone has worked on for twenty years. We can't fell trees whole on most of these lots. Instead we climb or use a lift where access allows, take the tree down in pieces and lower them on ropes. It is slower, and it is why our estimates list the method along with the price.
Pruning that keeps a tree healthy
Most of the trees worth keeping in Fairlawn yards just need good pruning. That means:
- Removing dead and broken limbs before they fall
- Cutting back branches that rub the roof or block gutters
- Raising low limbs so you can walk and mow under them
- Thinning a few interior branches on dense trees to reduce wind load
We make cuts at the branch collar following ANSI A300 practice and avoid topping, which leaves weak sprouts and decay behind.
Storm season
Summit County's damaging winds often come with summer thunderstorms. In the August 2023 storm, wind gusts reached 80 mph southwest of Kent and about 30,000 FirstEnergy customers in Summit and Portage counties were still without power the following afternoon. After a storm, look for split crotches, hanging limbs and trees that have newly started to lean. Keep clear of anything touching wires and call the utility first.
Leaves and brush
Fairlawn has long run a free fall pickup for bagged leaves, a program the city reported was already in its 27th year in 2011. That program is for leaves, not branches. When we prune or remove trees, all brush and wood leave with our crew unless you ask for firewood.
Replanting after a removal
When a big tree comes out of a small yard, the space changes fast: more sun on the lawn, more heat on the house, and sometimes a view you didn't want. If you plan to replant, pick a species sized for the spot rather than for the space the old tree used to fill. Keep large shade trees well back from the foundation and away from overhead lines, and have the stump ground deep enough that the new tree isn't planted into a decaying root plate.

Fairlawn Questions
Our tree is between our house and the neighbor's. Can you take it down without damage?
Usually, yes. On close lots we remove trees in sections and lower each piece with ropes so it doesn't land on roofs or fences. We'll explain the plan before we start and talk to your neighbor if you'd like.
Can I put branches out with the city's leaf bags?
Fairlawn's fall pickup is for bagged leaves, and items other than leaves are left at the curb. We take all the brush from our jobs, so you don't need to.
My parents can't keep up with their trees. Can you handle it for them?
Yes. We can meet you or them at the house, agree on what needs doing, and send the written estimate to whoever is handling it. Recurring pruning every few years keeps things from piling up.
How deep do you grind a stump in a lawn?
For lawn areas we grind below grade, typically several inches, so you can backfill with topsoil and seed. If you plan to replant close to the old spot, tell us; we can grind wider and deeper to clear more of the root flare.
