Between Ellet and the Portage Line

Tree Service in Springfield Township covers the southeast corner of Summit County. The township, established in 1808 and named after Springfield, Massachusetts, had 14,162 residents in 2020 on about 14.7 square miles of land. It wraps around the village of Lakemore at its center, includes the Sawyerwood community along the border with Akron's Ellet neighborhood, and reaches the Portage County line at Brimfield and Suffield townships. That makes for a mix of older neighborhoods close to Akron and roomier lots farther east.

Two kinds of property

In Sawyerwood and the streets near Ellet, lots are smaller and trees sit close to houses, garages and lines. Those jobs often call for climbing and sectional removal. Farther out, toward the Portage line, parcels are larger and there's often room to fell a tree into open ground, which is faster and easier on the budget. We'll tell you which approach your property needs and price it accordingly.

Neighbors on every side

Springfield borders Tallmadge to the north, Akron to the northwest, Coventry Township to the west, Green to the south, and Lake Township in Stark County to the southeast, plus Brimfield and Suffield townships in Portage County. Akron annexed the old Springfield high school site in 1929, and Akron still reaches into the township's northwest corner. For homeowners, that patchwork mostly matters when a question comes up about who maintains the road edge or a tree near the street.

Common requests

1. Removing dead ash and other declining trees, especially along back lot lines 2. Pruning large maples and oaks over roofs and driveways 3. Clearing branches from service lines to the house 4. Storm cleanup after summer thunderstorms 5. Grinding stumps from past removals 6. Clearing overgrowth on larger parcels for gardens, sheds or fences

Pests to watch for

Emerald ash borer has been confirmed in every Ohio county since 2016, so any ash in the township should be evaluated. Spotted lanternfly has now been reported in Summit County as well, and its favorite host is tree-of-heaven, an invasive tree that pops up along fences, roadsides and disturbed lots. If you have tree-of-heaven on your property, removing it, and following up on root sprouts, is a sensible step.

Utility trimming

Ohio Edison lists both Springfield Township and Lakemore on its tree-trimming program, which runs on a four-year cycle. Trees that reach primary lines between visits should be reported to the utility, not cut by homeowners or tree crews.

Storm season

Summer thunderstorms bring most of the tree damage in southeast Summit County. During the August 2023 storm, about 30,000 FirstEnergy customers in Summit and Portage counties were still without power the following afternoon. Dead limbs and trees with decay at the base are the first to fail, so having them handled before summer saves cleanup later.

Springfield Township Questions

Do you work in Lakemore and Sawyerwood too?

Yes. We cover the whole township, including Lakemore, Sawyerwood and the areas out toward the Portage County line.

How do I report a spotted lanternfly?

The Summit County OSU Extension office can help with identification, and the Ohio Department of Agriculture tracks sightings. If the insects are on tree-of-heaven in your yard, removing those trees reduces their favorite food.

A branch is on the line to my house. Can you cut it?

If it's on the service line between the pole and your house, we can often prune around it carefully. If it's on the primary lines along the road, Ohio Edison must make it safe first.

How do I know if a tree is likely to fail in a storm?

Watch for dead branches, fungus on the trunk or roots, cracks, cavities and a lean that's getting worse. Any one of those is worth an inspection, especially if the tree could hit your house.
