Around the Circle and Beyond

Tree Service in Tallmadge often means working for people who have lived in the same house a long time. Census figures show 82.7% of Tallmadge homes are owner-occupied, and 23.7% of residents are 65 or older. That combination produces a familiar call: a tree the owner planted decades ago has grown over the house, or an old maple has started dropping limbs, and climbing a ladder isn't an option anymore.

A town laid out around a green

Tallmadge was founded in 1807 by the Rev. David Bacon and named for Benjamin Tallmadge, a Revolutionary War officer who owned land here. It's the second-oldest city in Summit County after Hudson. Bacon laid it out around a central public square, which became Tallmadge Circle, where eight roads meet like spokes. The Historic Tallmadge Church, built in 1825, and the Old Town Hall from 1859 still face the Circle. Streets fan out from there into neighborhoods built over two centuries, and the trees vary as much as the houses.

Up on the high ground

At about 1,194 feet, Tallmadge sits higher than Akron, and its spoke roads run straight out across fairly open, rolling land. Open ground and height both mean wind. Big trees on exposed lots, especially those with heavy, spreading crowns, take the brunt of summer thunderstorms. Crown thinning and reduction pruning reduce that load without making the tree look butchered.

A Summit city with a Portage edge

Most of Tallmadge is in Summit County, but its east side reaches into Portage County because the city annexed small pieces of Brimfield Township. For homeowners, that rarely matters day to day, but it can affect which county office handles a drainage or road-edge question. Electric service in much of the area comes from Ohio Edison, which lists Tallmadge on its four-year tree-trimming cycle.

The jobs we do most

1. Pruning large yard trees back from roofs, chimneys and gutters 2. Removing trees that have died or developed serious trunk decay 3. Taking out ash killed by emerald ash borer before they become brittle 4. Cleaning up split limbs and hangers after storms 5. Stump grinding so the area can be replanted or turned into a garden

Planning ahead

Many Tallmadge owners prefer to plan tree work for the dormant season, when trees are leafless, defects are easier to see and lawns hold up better under equipment. If you'd like, we can look at all your trees once and write up a few years of work in priority order, so you can tackle the urgent items first and budget for the rest.

Tallmadge Questions

Can you set up a multi-year plan for all the trees on my lot?

Yes. We'll look at every tree, list what each one needs, and put the work in order of urgency on a written estimate. You can do it all at once or spread it over a few seasons.

Is crown reduction the same as topping?

No. Crown reduction shortens branches back to healthy side limbs that can take over, keeping the tree's natural shape. Topping cuts limbs off at random heights and leaves weak regrowth and decay, so we don't do it.

I live on the Portage County side. Do you work there?

Yes. We cover all of Tallmadge, including the east side that extends into Portage County.

Should I worry about spotted lanternfly in Tallmadge?

It's worth watching for. OSU Extension in Summit County reported spotted lanternflies in the county in September 2025, and tree-of-heaven is their favorite host. If you have tree-of-heaven on your lot, removing it is a reasonable step, and sightings can be reported through the Ohio Department of Agriculture.
